Huangpian, or “yellow flakes,” is the autumn pick of Pu’er tea, where the leaves are larger, harder, and yellower than in the spring and summer harvests. As a result, the taste of the tea is lighter and fresher, more vegetable-like and hay-like instead of fruity, and thick and soft in its mouthfeel. A good point of reference for this tea is Japanese bancha, which has the same characteristics. Huangpian has a lower-than-average amount of caffeine among Pu'er teas.
